Tulsa Man Shares His West Nile Virus Survival Story

West Nile in Oklahoma

The West Nile Virus continues to be a serious problem in Oklahoma with some 123 confirmed cases this year that have resulted in seven deaths. Of those 123 statewide West Nile cases, 29 have been from the city of Tulsa which has caused two deaths. Tulsa resident, Jim Schmidt, was one of the fortunate people who contracted the deadly West Nile but survived.

West Nile Survivor

While on summer vacation with his family in Florida, Jim Schmidt started feeling ill. As his illness progressed his wife finally convinced him to go to the emergency room in Orlando where doctors couldn’t figure out what was wrong with him. After five days of testing it was determined that Schmidt had contracted the West Nile Virus. Schmidt has no idea where or when the mosquito that gave him West Nile Virus bit him.

For two weeks Schmidt stayed in the Intensive Care Unit in pretty bad shape. For weeks, Schmidt hardly slept, as he dealt with a lack of control over his muscles, and suffered through overwhelming pain. He spent five nights sleeping on ice as doctors tried to get his temperature below 105 degrees.

“It felt like 1,000 little men the size of ants inside you trying to saw, gnaw and maybe flame their way out of your bones,” Schmidt said.

Schmidt’s wife, Sheila, wasn’t sure if he was going to make it. At one point she remembers going through her phone and undeleted all of his voicemails so she will always be able to hear his voice if he passes.

After more than a month in Florida, Schmidt was at last able to go back to his Tulsa, OK home. His strength increased as he focused on staying positive as thousands of prayers and messages of support poured in from across the world. Now that he’s back to being able to drive, write, use a computer, and even go running, Schmidt sees his recovery as a true miracle.

Mosquito Control

The Tulsa Health Department confirmed it has sprayed pesticides in his neighborhood more than once this summer to try and eliminate the mosquito population. The health department also said it ordered extra pesticide this week in case the mosquito season runs longer than normal. Unfortunately, this mosquito control is often not enough. Tulsa residents must also take some preventative measures.

West Nile Preventative Measures

  • Use insect repellents containing DEET

Sleep Tight and Don’t Let the Bedbugs Bite

When I was growing up my mother would tuck me into bed every night and whisper, “goodnight… sleep tight… don’t let the bed bugs bite.” Until recently, I always thought that the saying was just an endearing bedtime phrase that didn’t mean anything. Well, those days are over. After nearly sixty years of living mostly bedbug-free, the US is facing a national infestation. Bedbug infestations have risen 500% in the last few years alone, and they’re not just in dirty hotels – they’re at the 5-star ones as well. They are closing down businesses and can be found at your local movie theaters, airports, and retail stores as they inch closer and closer to your home. They are quite easy to bring home if you have been near them.

The occurrence of these tiny, blood-sucking pests has been reported in every kind of neighborhood, in every state across the country including Oklahoma. What it means is that you’re at risk right now. Here’s a beautiful infographic that illustrates the rise of bedbugs, the most infected cities, the difficulty of controlling them, and what to do about them:
